Handcrafted jewellery such as handmade necklaces are perfect for depicting our islands’ huge treasure chest of ancient art and monuments. Orkney jewelry often presents special collections based on this theme.

They include attributes from the wonderful craftsmanship of the Neolithic folks who left their mark on the ancient village of Skara Brae. These men and women loved art and ornaments. Their stone built dressers survive to this day. And magnificently decorated stones reveal the enigmatic emblems of these ancient people which are preserved crisp as the day they were carved.

Many of the buildings then on the shore must now have been covered by sea. A group of archaeologists, geo scientists and geographers have already been surveying the sea bed and have just identified what seems to be a henge monument under a loch (an oval enclosed by ditches and banks) very close to the famous Ring of Brodgar standing stones. And what looks to be a tomb much like Maeshowe burial cairn has been identified in a sheltered bay.

A lot more work needs to be done to find out just what these structures or features are. Divers will undoubtedly be sent down again to check out the stones coated in seaweed in waters that have very limited visibility. And sonar studies much like the geophysical surveys on land will look closer at what lies below the waves.

Much more inspiration for handmade necklaces similar to the Skara Brae design may perhaps be found eventually. Nevertheless the monuments and tombs will remain underwater keeping most of their secrets eternally.

Woodcraft is so much more than the skill involved in turning wood into shelter and functional furniture. Although the ability to do those things with wood have certainly been an integral part of the human survival skills set, and being able to envision a house or chair from a stand of trees is remarkable in itself, woodcraft has developed well beyond it utilitarian origins. The artistic side of woodcraft has drawn ever more people to take it up, and each new convert is just the latest in a centuries-long chain of master woodworkers which was old when the ancient Egyptians were carving wood coffins for their deceased Pharaohs.

Woodcraft is a blend of artistic inspiration, highly developed manual dexterity, and perserverance. It is nothing if not highly challenging and equally satisfying. Woodcraft produces fine sculptures and decorative frames; it accomplishes things impossible in other media like metal, ceramic, and glass; being able to form wood into shapes is ability entirely different from those needed to sculpt other substances. Properly finishing woodcraft is another area in which specific training is highly recommended. The history of woodcraft demands the respect of all who presume to practice it. Wooden vessels dating back to the Stone Age have been found and in northern Germany and Denmark Bronze Age woodcrafters fashioned coffins from trees. Germany is also the site of wooden animal figurines dating back to the Iron Age.

The 21st century is as much a century of woodcraft as any which has gone before; almost every home has wood in its construction, architectural features, and furniture. And each of them is the end result of techniques millennia in the making. If you are feeling the appeal of woodcraft, and want to give it a try, just be patient in your efforts. What you are attempting seems to come as naturally to humans as breathing and eating, so somewhere in you past there was very likely a woodcrafter.

Scrapbooking always seems like a hobby that is easy to do, but generally that hasn’t been the reality. There are countless stories of people with no real creative flare sitting for hours in front of a blank page with no real clue about scrapbooking page layout ideas. Luckily, in recent times some very creative people have done all the hard work and created some great resources to make scrapbooking a craft that someone with no natural creative talent can actively take part in. For example, there are now guides out there that teach the fundamentals of good scrapbook design with illustrated examples so you can see as you learn. There are also books filled with templates to copy if you’re not really interested in learning but you want to create a scrapbook for a particular occasion.

Even if you aren’t planning to take up scrapbooking as a long-term hobby using these guides is a great place to start. You might start out by copying existing layouts, but over time, even by copying, you’ll pick up on the tricks of the trade and eventually you’ll be able to come up with your own designs and layouts. For example, you’ll learn what colours and textures work well together and how to align photos on the page to get the most out of them. All it takes to be good at scrapbooking is practice and determination. By using guides and resources as a starting point there’s no reason why you can’t make your next gift to a loved one a scrapbook that looks wonderful.

First, always be certain that the Disney porcelain dolls you purchase are true Disney products. The incredible popularity of Disney characters and the insatiable demand for any product related to them has spurred an epidemic of fakes and knock-offs. When you buy an unauthorized Disney product, you’re hurting yourself in multiple ways. Initially, you’re diluting the value of the actual Disney brand–and that’s not good for your collection! Additionally, you’re actively supporting someone who is willfully breaking trademark and other intellectual property laws. Finally, you’re adding items to your collection that are unlikely to have any real lasting values to true collectors in the field.

Second, look for limited run Disney porcelain dolls. There’s nothing wrong with the mass-produced products if you’re a casual collector or simply love the featured character. However, those who collect with an interest in the long-term value of the dolls will tell you that limited edition dolls and figurines are far more likely to appreciate in value than the more common models. Make your buying decisions with that fact in mind and, when you have a choice, defer to the less commonplace dolls.

Third, remember that no matter how careful you are in your buying decisions, collectibles are not guaranteed to increase in value. Don’t think of Disney dolls strictly as an investment. Instead, seek out the dolls that appeal to you on a personal level and that will bring you some satisfaction regardless of their eventual monetary value. That way, you’ll be happy with your doll collection no matter what happens in the marketplace. For many people, there’s nothing more uplifting or fun than an item featuring Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck or any of the hundreds of other famous Disney characters. For others, nothing can compare to the elegance and attractiveness of a well-made porcelain figurine. Disney porcelain dolls really are an outstanding collectible.

To complete even the most wonderful Halloween costume, you will need a mask. The face is the first thing people look at when meeting you, so the mask will have a big impact on their impressions about your ensemble. Many masks can be bought online. Choices range from favorite horror characters to sci-fi creatures. There are also the traditional Halloween characters of ghosts, witches and ghouls. Speciality mask stores provide a variety of choices, but if you prefer to be more unique then have a go at making your own mask.

Latex Halloween masks. Latex or hard plastic masks can be quite uncomfortable to wear. Made from synthetic plastic materials, they can even be harmful if not used in the correct way. Instead, you can create a latex-inspired mask. You will need poster board or lightweight card, elastic or tongue depressor plus a variety of decorations to create your desired effect. First. cut the card to the shape of your face. Then put holes in either side. After that, decorate to make the character of your choice. Make it as gruesome as you wish.

Paper and cloth masks are easy to make from cloth, scissors, markers and duck tape. Lay the material flat, cutting a hole on the centre. Next, on a piece of paper, draw the mask you desire. Now, turn the cloth inside out. Lay it face down. After that, tape the sides of the mask down then cut in eye holes. You are now ready to decorate the Halloween mask using the markers and various other craft products needed to achieve the desired effect. A printed mask is a less time consuming creation using the computer. On the internet you will find a lot of Halloween sites where you can obtain mask patterns where all you need to do is print them off. The only thing that limits you, when making masks, is your imagination. Using computer programes and software makes it easy to design and print out a mask of your choosing.

Woodcraft projects are time-tested woodcraft patterns, sometimes new ones as well, which help one create an elaborately crafted piece with minimum effort. That is, with readymade projects, the woodworker who does the work need not have to start from scratch, but instead the plan, drawings at various stages of the construction, and directions for accomplishing the task are already laid down by the designer of the project. The only thing left for the user is to execute it in the way he or she desires. Taking into consideration the time factor, woodcraft projects offered this way save a lot of time for woodworkers as they are completely freed from the job of conception and design, the first step in the making of any woodcraft object.

Various websites, tailor-made to the skills of both seasoned woodcraft professionals and beginners alike, offer woodcraft projects. Whether it is indoor projects, wood pattern for children or functional woodcraft plans and decorative patterns, woodcraft projects are available in abundance on these sites, such that a novice woodworker or a professional craftsman can find fodder for his/her skills in a stunning variety and scope. All that woodworkers need to do is browse the websites, and select the project that suits their style and requirement. Depending on the quality of the project, these websites may charge a fee, before the woodcrafter can actually lay hands over the design and instructions that will help him execute the project. Accomplishing complex projects definitely requires dexterity, imagination and patience, even if one has the related design, diagram and instructions for doing so.

Whether it is a wooden planter or a silhouette to adorn your drawing room wall, these projects help you realize it with minimum fuss. And once you complete the project, the satisfaction the work brings is beyond the realm of words. It is to be experienced, to realize your goal. Discover the talent in you, and let the woodcraft projects help you find it! It is hidden deep down inside and you are the only able to tap this resource.

Mosaic is a form of tiling that is usually used in showers and on floors to add a lot of color and style to the room. Mosaics can be found in a large number of textures, colors, layouts and shapes so that if required, you could customize every room in the house. Not only are they are a form of tiling, they are sometimes even considered works of art, called mosaic art. Most mosaic tiles come with ridges on the backside so that glue can bond more securely to the tile. Nearly all types of glass, stone and ceramic material can be considered as a mosaic tile. The vitreous-glass mosaic tile is a glassy stone-like material that is opaque, not clear, and is not as sharp as regular glass when cut. It is better to use mosaic supplies like mosaic glass cutters for cutting glass mosaic tiles; regular tile nippers may cut the tile but not as predictably as with a mosaic glass cutter.

Ceramic mosaic tiles are popularly used for architectural applications, as they are quite cheap and can be easily cut using regular tile nippers. Sometimes, broken pieces of china and other types of dinnerware are used as mosaics, but as this ceramic dinnerware is engineered to be unbreakable, the plates produce razor edges when broken. Some of the mosaic tiles come attached to fiberglass mesh that keeps the tiles arranged in a grid. This mesh is then glued directly to the floor to be tiled. If you need to remove the mesh to get loose tile, the tile has to be soaked in warm water and the tiles fall off the mesh. Mosaic tiles are not only used for flooring; they are also used to produce pieces of mosaic art that can be used for display. Mosaic tables make a great piece of furniture, with a tabletop made of mosaic tiles. Pools are the greatest source of use of mosaic art, with mosaic used in different mosaic patterns on the bottom and edges of the pool.

There are lots of reasons why customers are choosing to buy handmade, but the best reasons to buy handmade are these:

1. Buying handmade supports traditional arts. Throughout history artisans and crafters have developed methods and techniques to make items that are useful for everyday living beautiful and unique. Buying handmade supports the continuance of those arts. Without a market for handmade goods some artistic techniques that have been around for thousands of years might die out.

2. Buying handmade means buying one of a kind. In today’s culture that has a relentless focus on uniformity buying handmade items helps you stand out from the pack and express your unique personality with one of a kind pieces of art and clothing. If you are comfortable with who you are and like being different from everyone else than buying handmade one of a kind items is definitely for you.

3. Buying handmade means buying higher quality. If you buy handmade items from a highly skilled artisan or high end crafter the item that you buy will almost always be of much higher quality than something you can get at the local discount store that was mass produced. Handmade items are made with high end materials and carefully crafted so that they will last and stay beautiful for a long time.

4. Buying handmade supports small businesses. Since most artisans and crafters use unique or not mass produced materials that are made by another artisan or crafter when you buy handmade products you’re not only giving money to the artist but also to all the other artists that create the supplies to make that product. Paying more for a handmade item is really an investment because you are helping to support several artists.

5. Buying handmade makes a statement. Making a conscious choice to buy handmade products instead of mass produced ones says that things like quality, craftsmanship, and supporting small businesses instead of big retail businesses matters to you. When you buy handmade you are using your dollars to tell stores like Wal Mart that not every consumer can be seduced by the lowest price.

Shop handmade online, it’s easier! Buying handmade online is the most popular way to shop handmade. HandmadeShoppingDirectory.com – Top site for 1000’s of Fabulous Handmade & Arts & Crafts, shops & stores. HandmadeShoppingDirectory.com helps you to drive high quality traffic to your business, not just traffic but serious shoppers and buyers who are looking for products and ready to make a purchase! They are the unique Handmade Shopping destination and service that puts you in charge! You decide your bid and placement. It is fast and easy and no third party to get in the way, a great ebay alternative for selling your products, and best of all, there are NO FEES and NO HIDDEN CHARGES for you and NO FEES or NO COMMISSIONS.

Polymer clay is one of the most fascinating new ways to make jewelry. It is easy to work with and shape into any type of design that you can imagine. If you’ve always wanted beautiful one-of-a-kind items, then you will love polymer clay jewelry. Plus, you get to make it yourself which is both fun and rewarding. So how can you get in on some of the action? Below are some basic steps for making polymer clay jewelry to help you get started.

Designate a specific area of the home where you can work comfortably and where you can store all of your supplies. You will need a flat area where you can roll out your clay so you can work with it easier. Gather all of your supplies together. This would include a variety of different color clays and accessories. You will need tools for shaping the polymer clay and a special pan set aside for baking it in your oven. You will also need jewelry accessories such as chains, hooks and so forth.

After you have shaped your design and have everything the way you like it, then it’s ready for firing. Polymer clay can be baked right in your over but you need to make sure you keep all the items used separated. Baking the clay hardens the piece so it will maintain its shape and be durable enough to wear. Let the jewelry cool down and then add your chains, earring hooks and other accessories. Now it’s time for showing off your beautiful creations. When working with polymer clay always follow safety precautions and make sure that you keep it away from food items at all times. Keep any tools used separated and placed in their own designated area when not in use.
